Elke Krasny: Unplanned History – Writing It Down/Writing It Up as a Critical Curatorial Practice

In recent spatial practices and engagement in urban transformation, debates have surrounded the putative master planning and the putative un-planning or un-planned. This opposition has been undisputedly at the heart of critical spatial practice and theory.
LECTURE (IN ENGLISH)
The title of this lecture proposes a paradox as its starting point: unplanned history. History eludes planning, it has already happened. Still, the notion of the unplanned, as the lecturer emphasizes, is not the only conduit into history. Quite on the contrary, the writing of history, as feminist and postcolonial scholarship have shown, needs care and planning.
Elke Krasny will position a different genealogy of feminist urban curating (largely unwritten) and feminist strategies for writing an urban history that otherwise will have remained untold and invisible. These two histories will be unfold in parallel as part of an ongoing exploration of critical spatial practices in urban curating and of feminist (proto-)curatorial models of conviviality and the writing of unwritten history.
WORKSHOP (IN ENGLISH)
In combination with the lecture, the workshop will look at the interrelations and interdependencies between critical practices of artistic production, curatorial approaches, issues of urban epistemology and research-based strategies. The focus will be on conviviality and care and on issues of vulnerability, resistance, knowing bodies of agency/(un)known bodies of writing.
The workshop is free of charge and will be held in English. The number of participants is limited.

Edith-Russ-Haus for Media Art will award three production and residency grants—10,000 EUR each—to promote international artistic efforts in the field of media art.
The grants from the Foundation of Lower Saxony at the Edith-Russ-Haus for Media Art were created in 2001, and are recognized internationally for their support of the production in the wide range of media art, from video art and net-based projects to audio or audio-visual installations.
The grant covers a period of six months—July–December 2014—and requires residence in Oldenburg for at least one month.
The project or artistic work should be completed within the six-month grant period. An international jury of experts will choose the grant winners.

Edith-Russ-Haus Award for Emerging Media Artists of the Sparda-Bank 2014
The Edith-Russ-Haus for Media Art will award up to five grants for artistic works in the area of new media.
–two grants to the amount of 3,000 EUR and participation in the Award for Emerging Artists exhibition at the ERH;
–up to three artists will be acknowledged by having their work presented in the Award for Emerging Artists exhibition at the ERH.
The Edith-Russ-Haus for Media Art would like to recognize new stances in media art and support the winning artists with grants and/or an exhibition. The prize is intended to lastingly promote the careers of young media artists.
Awards will be given to existing works from the broad spectrum of media art, from net-based projects or video art to audio or audio-visual installations.
International artists up to the age of 35 may participate.
An international jury of experts will choose the prize winners.

About Edith-Russ-Haus for Media Art
The Edith-Russ-Haus for Media Art opened in 2000 and is devoted to a wide range of current issues related to media art. Exhibitions by international artists and presentations, performances, concerts, workshops and lectures by media artists and theorists are regularly organized. Important past exhibitions have dealt with key contemporary themes such as Something Other Than Photography: Photo&Media andGeneration i.2 – The Aesthetics of the Digital in the 21st Century; important media artists have been presented in solo exhibitions. In October 2013, the first exhibition of the winners of the Edith-Russ-Haus Award for Emerging Media Artists of the Sparda-Bank was presented: Kuai Shen with the space and sound installation Oh!m1gas: biomimetic stridulation environment and ss-io (Hyun Ju Song und Mi Lyoung Bae) with the generative audiovisual installation The Moment.
Since 2001, the Edith-Russ-Haus for Media Art has conducted a regular guest-artist programme, which up to now has sponsored and implemented 35 artistic proposals. To this end, two one-room apartments and a residential studio are available in the guesthouse of the Edith-Russ-Haus, and grant recipients can call upon the institutional support of the institution in implementing their projects.

The second edition of the Istanbul Design Biennial will be realized between 18 October and 14 December 2014 by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (IKSV), and will comprise a wide range of events, workshops, conferences and screenings centered around its exhibitions program. Under the overarching title The Future Is Not What It Used To Be, the Biennial's curator, Zoë Ryan, revisits the manifesto as a platform and catalyst for critical thinking in design. The biennial asks, how can we reclaim the manifesto for the 21st century and beyond, not only in the production of texts, but through actions, services, provocations, or objects and seize the potential to incite inventive outcomes? As a platform for generating new ideas, the biennial invites submissions for contemporary manifestos that explore the complex role of design in today's society.

Norway's leading art centre is looking for an ambitious and enthusiastic person to further develop our strong profile; representing continuity as well as new ideas. Fixed-term four years full time, with the possibility to extend for further four years.
After leading Hordaland Art Centre for six years, widening our networks, implementing a highly successful programme and a collaborative and productive working environment, Director Anne Szefer Karlsen ends her six-year term in 2014.
We welcome applications from those that have a relevant postgraduate degree in the arts; knowledge of contemporary art practices and can demonstrate a strong curatorial practice as well as the ability to lead and develop Hordaland Art Centre in the future.
The Director has the full artistic and administrative responsibility for the Art Centre, as well as overseeing the staff (today including Coordinator/Exhibition producer, Information and public programmes, Accountant, Receptionists and Technicians). As our new Director, you will be instrumental in shaping the strategic direction of Hordaland Art Centre, its programme and collaborations. Hordaland Art Centre is in a strong position with a highly valued profile. You will need to be able to build on the current achievements and be in a position to develop the capacity of the Art Centre.
If you have a different first language, you must be willing to learn Norwegian. The Director will live in Bergen.

Hordaland Art Centre in Bergen was established by the Bildende Kunstneres Forening Hordaland (BKFH) and Norske kunsthåndverkere Vest-Norge (NKVN) in 1976 as the first artist-run art centre in Norway. It receives its core funding from Hordaland County Council, and is an active member of the network organisation Association of Art Centres in Norway. Its activities are based around the exhibition programme with equal emphasis on seminars, presentations and dialogue. Since 1987 Hordaland Art Centre has been hosting a residency programme, open to international artists, curators, writers and other art professionals. Hordaland Art Centre bookshop carries a broad range of magazines and books dealing with contemporary art and culture, as well as our own publications published by ourselves or in collaboration.
Hordaland Art Centre also works with public art commissions (in collaboration with Public Art Norway), a regional and international 'Outside' programme (in collaboration with other institutions), has since 1983 collaborated with Bergen National Academy of Art and Desgin, and has an ongoing collaboration with the fifth-grade pupils at the neighbouring Nordnes Primary School.
