50th anniversary of Art Cologne
April 14–17, 2016

Art Cologne, the oldest fair for modern and contemporary art in the world, opens its doors for the 50th time from April 14 to 17, 2016. On the occasion of the anniversary of the Internationaler Kunstmarkt, which took place for the first time in the historic Gürzenich festival hall under the name Kunstmarkt Köln 67, a total of 219 galleries from 25 countries will present top-tier art next April, including paintings, sculptures, photographs, prints, multiples, installations, performances and video art. The range of offerings of Art Cologne extends from modern through postwar to contemporary art.

Numerous international top galleries are once again represented in 2016 in the largest section for Contemporary Art in hall 11.2. Participating for the first time or returning to Cologne are, among others: PERROTIN (Paris), Max Hetzler (Berlin/Paris), Krinzinger (Vienna), OMR (Mexico City), Nils Stærk (Copenhagen), Shane Campbell (Chicago), CANADA (New York), Paragon (London), Roslyn Oxley9 (Sydney) and Rüdiger Schöttle (Munich). Hall 11.1 is dedicated to the "historically progressive art" of the modern and postwar periods. Renowned galleries and art dealers will offer a high-quality overview of these pioneering eras. Exciting new exhibitors like Bernheimer Fine Art (Lucerne, Switzerland), Montrasio Arte (Milan) or Hollis Taggart (New York) will join participants of many years like Axel Vervoordt (Antwerp/Hong Kong), Beck & Eggeling (Düsseldorf), Ben Brown Fine Arts (London/Hong Kong), Lahumière (Paris), Galerie Thomas (Munich), Thomas Salis (Salzburg), von Vertes (Zurich) and Whitestone (Hong Kong/Tokyo).

Young galleries and emerging artists are found in hall 11.3: 29, while young galleries that are no more than ten years old will show their programmes in the New Contemporaries section. In the experimental Collaborations section, which is organised in cooperation with the New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA), a wide range of galleries will present singular and jointly planned projects around the theme of collaboration.

JR @Frieder Burda Museum and in Public Space in Baden-Baden

The Exhibition JR @Museum Frieder Burda ( curated by Patricia  Kamp) and in Public Space in Baden-Baden >> save the dates: March 1–June 29, 2014
The French artist JR (1983) is one of the most innovative representatives of contemporary art
on the international art scene. He lives and works in Paris and New York, and he consciously keeps his true identity a secret. He applies his oversized  black-and-white photographs   in   the form of monumental posters to walls worldwide. Thoroughly considering the urban architecture, JR’s work adapts cultural and historical contexts, and the emotional impact finds expression in the faces of the people in his close-up photographs. Based on this idea, the artist has already carried out large-scale projects in Europe, North and South America, Africa, and Asia. JR’s most important motivation is interaction with other people.
His works raise  questions about freedom and identity and in how far art can change people’s perception of  themselves and their environment. However, his  actions   also  draw attention to injustice. Characteristic of JR’s art are the stories he tells with his collages and his talent for bringing together isolated worlds. JR creates relationships. He is a conductor who lends a face to anonymous existences or unrecognized and even forgotten stories.
In 2011, JR won the TED Prize—the 2007 recipient of the award was Bill Clinton—for his creative visions.
"My art does not change the world, but I hope it inspires people to change how they look at the world and at other people,” says JR.

The Exhibition at the Museum
The exhibition at the Museum Frieder Burda is being curated by Patricia  Kamp in close collaboration with JR. Using photographs and videos by the artist, it presents his early and ongoing projects and thus provides a retrospective look into JR’s overall artistic development.
IT ALL BEGAN WITH A FOUND CAMERA
JR began his career as a graffiti artist. As an adolescent, after finding a camera in the  Paris Metro he began documenting his jaunts over the roofs and in the tunnels of Paris. He carried out his first large-scale project, PORTRAIT OF A GENERATION, as early as 2004. Following riots in the Paris suburbs, JR put up posters in just these suburbs and middle-class districts of Paris featuring photographs he took of youths during the unrest. These images challenge passers-by  in that they  question the social and media representation of this generation. After the first posters were quickly removed by  the city cleaning service, the city  government soon legalized the project and suggested to JR to apply his posters to public surfaces near the city hall.
The exhibition in Baden-Baden focuses, among other things, on the FACE 2 FACE project. In
2007, JR organized the largest illegal photography exhibition ever: he produced portraits in the
Middle East of Israelis and Palestinians with the same professions—for example, teachers, shopkeepers, sculptors—and posted the enormous photographs on the walls of buildings in the settlements on both sides of the border, including at the border installations themselves. The message is obvious: the hostile groups cannot be distinguished on the basis of their facial expression.
For WOMEN ARE HEROES, in 2008 JR ventured into the Favela Morro da Providencia in Rio de Janeiro with a bold plan in mind: he wanted to meet the residents and lend a face to those
who otherwise remain anonymous: the women of the favela. They are those who suffer most
from drug-related crime, the weakest members of society and yet at the same time its pillars. He
pasted large-scale posters on the shacks—wall-high black-and-white photographs of eyes and
faces, close-ups of women from the favela. JR continued the WOMEN ARE HEROES project,
about which he also shot a film of the same name, in Kenya, Liberia, Sierra Leone, India, and
Cambodia.
JR places older people at the center of his project THE WRINKLES OF THE CITY, a generation of urban dwellers who experienced how their cities were transformed during the 20th century and yet go largely unnoticed in the cityscape. After stations in Cartagena, Los Angeles, Havana, and Shanghai, in early 2013 his project took him to Berlin, where he interviewed elderly people, asking them about their memories, and put up posters featuring photographs he had taken of them on walls in Berlin’s urban space. The striking faces and the wrinkles of those he portrayed stand for the checkered history, from World War II to the fall of the Wall, that the people and
their city have gone through.
UNFRAMED—The  Project  in Public  Space in  Baden-Baden
Marseille, Bordeaux, Washington, Sao Paulo, Grottaglie in southern Italy—since 2009, JR has
traveled far and wide with the UNFRAMED project. For the first time in his career, he does not hang up his own pictures but works of known or unknown photographers. The exhibition presents project photographs of Vevey from 2010 and of Marseille, the 2013 European Capital of Culture. JR visited the residents of the working class neighborhood Belle de Mai, selected hundreds of photographs out of their photo albums, and subsequently posted a good dozen of them in the district between the harbor and the main train station: snapshots from the period of the People’s Front government, old school pictures, photographs of sailors, people on outings, and commuters—all of them are liberated from anonymity and take on new dimensions in urban space.
Within the scope of the exhibition at the Museum Frieder Burda, UNFRAMED is also coming to
Baden-Baden. As a large-scale project in the city’s urban space, UNFRAMED BADEN-BADEN addresses German-French history and the friendship between the two countries. By putting up posters featuring historical photographs from people’s private photo albums in Baden-Baden’s historic   city   center,   JR   places   the   theme   in   a   new  context. In the run-up to the exhibition, citizens of Baden-Baden were invited to participate and submit their own personal material. The city has always been a link between Germany and France where, after decades of enmity, the reluctant rapprochement between the two countries is palpable.

PICTURE BERLIN, OPEN CALL

PICTURE BERLIN | 4 July – 16 August 2014
Deadline: 8 March 2014

PICTURE BERLIN is a six-week summer program designed for emerging artists working in contemporary art and photography. A rigorous studio practice forms the heart of the program and working in community with other artist is its soul. The dynamic programming offers over 15 lectures by Berlin-based artists, one-on-one discussions with over ten international artists and curators, multiple exhibitions, group meals and work reviews, studio visits, a curatorial marathon, and six choreographed artist walks. The city shapes the program and is the springboard naturally flowing into the greater European art scene. As we mark the fifth year, the 2014 summer session offers the opportunity to participate in September's PICTURE BERLIN Festival.

Founded in 2009 by artists for artists, PICTURE BERLIN continues to be run by artists as a hybrid program merging the concentrated studio practice of an artist residency with the support of the art academy. PICTURE BERLIN becomes a network designed in part by each session's artists. As the weeks go by, living and working together, the boundaries dissolve. There is no separation between studio practice, a one-on-one critique, or a shared meal. Every experience informs the next.

As the fifth session closes we are excited to honor our experiences by hosting a PICTURE BERLIN Festival, for our 2010–2014 PICTURE BERLIN alumni artists. The 29 August–13 September 2 week Festival features wide-ranging events from showing in a series of exhibitions, to giving artist talks and having peer-to-peer portfolio reviews and reviews by curators–bringing home our international PICTURE BERLIN community.
The application is  free. You could download it from the web site.

For further insight into the program and a detailed explanation of program fees please visit the website  or contact us directly info@pictureberlin.org.

SFC – Shoah Film Collection, Call for entries

SFC – Shoah Film Collection, Call for entries
deadline: 02 June 2014
SFC – Shoah Film Collection  is a wordwide unique initiative by Agricola de Cologne, director of Cologne Art & Moving Images Awards addressed to the young generations of artists and film makers to use new technologies and contemporary approaches in art in order to senstize the visitors/audience to keep vivid the memory of SHOAH.
Launched on occasion of 65th return of the Liberation of the Concentration Camp of Auschwitz on 27 January 2010 SFC – Shoah Film Collection has meanwhile collected 37 outstanding pieces of videoart. Each year, on 27 January, SFC – Shoah Film Collection is releasing a new call for submissions , and now it is so far to invite again artists from the field of “moving images” to submit experimental art films and videoart reflecting the topic of “SHOAH” and related fields.
In 2012, SFC – Shoah Film Collection became the starting point and basis ofCTF – Collective Trauma Film Collections – http://ctf.engad.org
Also in 2012, a special event structure has been created, i.e. A Virtual Memorial – Commemorative Interventions” – for placing SFC – Shoah Film Collection in the context of complementary interventions like lectures, a symposion, exhibitions, discussion, artists talks and much more, in order to activate the artists and film makers, as well as the audience. In 2012 und 2013 the first events took place in Riga, Phnom Penh, Warsaw, and Vilnius, to be continued in 2014 & 2015 in Milan, Timisoara and other places –http://avmci.a-virtual-memorial.org
In this initiative, the topic of “SHOAH” can be understood as a metaphore for the dark side of human existence causing the most extreme violations of human rights and human dignity, as they are manifesting themselves in the process of the historical HOLOCAUST during the Nazi era in the 20th century, but also in the genocides and crimes against humanity as they are happening nowadays before our very eyes or in our neighbor’s garden.
Understanding as a witness what is happening these days, offers the possibility to understand the inimaginable which the historical HOLOCAUST is representing.
Reflecting the massacre of Srerbrenica, the genocide in Rwanda, Cambodia or Guatemala, the repressions in Tibet or the xenophobic behaviour of your neighbor or probably your own intolerance, is helping to understand the PAST, the PRESENT and FUTURE:
SHOAH must not happen again ever anywhere!
The film and video artists who want to submit are encouraged to inform themselves intensively about the subject matter before they submit a film/video in order to find their individual approach which may be historical, as well as most contemporary in different concern. The human dimension makes SHOAH a topic and matter which has the potential to affect all people anywhere on the globe since the values of humanity are vivid and valid as long as human invidividuals are living, no matter from what kind of cultural, ethnic, religious or social background they may come from.
The film/video selected will be included in SFC -Shoah Film Collection and the long-term plannings of its events.

LU SONG at ALEXANDER OCHS GALLERIES BERLIN / BEIJING

LU SONG  at ALEXANDER OCHS GALLERIES BERLIN | BEIJING
HILLS BEYOND THE BACKDROP

18 January - 8 March 2014
Opening: Friday, 17 January 2014, 7 pm - 9pm

Lu Song, Insomnia, 2013| oil on canvas |160 x 180 cm
photo credit: ALEXANDER OCHS GALLERIES BERLIN I BEIJING

The title Hills beyond the Backdrop refers to the Lu Song’s approach of image conception, ‘Backdrop’ in the sense of a coulisse whose beginning and boundaries appear to be indistinct. Metropolitan dreams of nature and compressed urban spaces serve as motifs for the artist. Sketching his exhibition Lu references “Place”, a text by Tacita Dean and co-author Jeremy Millar.

Peking-based Lu finds the citizens of metropolises to be chased by their wishes and fears, yet remaining in a situation of rising anonymity and strangeness. Anonym strangers struggle through increasingly equal looking cities, fighting for their survival.

Hills beyond… For Lu Song Hills are supposed to be a place beyond the cities, where the pressure loosens for the metropolises’ inhabitants, we can forget things and get lost. Places from where gates of new, individual possibilities open.

In fact a lot of his often surreal motifs picture urban housing complexes in the middle of faraway landscapes or even people whose actions appear to be strange or at least curious. The landscapes are fanciful and his scenery’s narrative often indefinite. They could be images from a dream world or a fleeting moment in the artist’s mind.

Lu Song’s artistic development can be observed in his remarkable use of color, which enables him to create unique effects and atmospheres. The paint proves to be a crucial element in his compositions. While some parts of his paintings are precisely carried out with clear outlines, other allegedly important areas, possibly determining for the plot, are only dimly suggested. He lets the heavily diluted paint run across the canvas in a way that figurative structures are not formed by a clear brush strokes, but by the rills of the mixing paints. Despite all unpredictability of the material Lu achieves to control the process of image development by leaving certain parts of the canvas unpainted and like that skillfully carves out his subject.

Lu Song and his paintings deliberately turn away from those real or apparent realities that are an omnipresent theme for many other Chinese painters. The European influence of the artist, who returned to Peking after finishing his Fine Art studies in London, is still noticeable. Yet, his relation with Asian art is just as obvious as his need to experiment with painting techniques and image content.

8th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art and other venues >>fresh news

Andreas Angelidakis: Crash Pad
26 January–3 August 2014 | Opening: 25 January, 2–6 pm

Crash Pad by Andreas Angelidakis is the first commissioned work of the 8th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art. The room installation opens on January 25, 2014, as a preliminary statement of the 8th Berlin Biennale.

With Crash Pad Angelidakis creates a multi-purpose room with a library in the front building of KW Institute for Contemporary Art, drawing upon the idea of the 19th century salon as a setting for cultural and political conversations. The installation reflects the two conflicting systems that modernized Greece in the 19th century: The Europeanized Greek diaspora (educated in Germany, France and England and influenced by the invention of antiquity there) and the peasant guerrilla fighters under general Theodoros Kolokotronis. Crash Pad also refers to the first bankruptcy of modern Greece in 1893, which brought about a predecessor of the International Monetary Fund, put in place by France, England and Germany in order to supervise the debt of Greece.

Crash Pad offers a space for events, discussion and exchange within the 8th Berlin Biennale, as well as a place for contemplation and exchange for the traveling artists arriving at KW: A domesticated ruin and a thank-you note from a Norwegian-Greek architect to the German idea of antiquity.

Besides the Crash Pad and KW Institute for Contemporary Art, the 8th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art takes place at Haus am Waldsee and Museen Dahlem - Staatliche Museen zu Berlin (Dahlem Museums - National Museums in Berlin). Thus for its 8th edition, the Berlin Biennale is collaborating with spaces already dedicated to art and to culture, establishing a refreshing cartography of the city, which will take us to parts of town unexplored by previous editions of the Berlin Biennale.

Both Haus am Waldsee and Museen Dahlem are extremely important landmarks in the city's cultural composition of the mid- to late 20th century; Museen Dahlem for having hosted the collections of art of West Berlin and now the house of three museums (Ethnologisches Museum, Museum für Asiatische Kunst and Museum Europäischer Kulturen); and Haus am Waldsee for rising to prominence since 1946 as one of the main venues for contemporary art. Since the 1990s, however, there has been a concentration of culture in Berlin-Mitte, a gradual but significant shift in the city's composition. It is very exciting for us to be able to collaborate with these two essential institutions, and imperative for the Berlin Biennale, in 2014, to show that the city has a broader cartography than usually imagined, if not engaged with.

About the 8th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art
8th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art | 29 May–3 August 2014

The 8th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art will bring together a range of local and international artistic positions that explore the intersection between larger historical narratives and individuals' lives. Thus, the 8th Berlin Biennale aims to counterpoise the empirical and the authoritative approaches to history and historical becoming. The research for the 8th Berlin Biennale is structured along three speculative approaches toward the city of Berlin: in its relationship to the built environment, in its relationship to citizenship, and in its relationship to labor. Another focus lies on ways in which the 18th and 19th century Berlin is contemplated within our current cultural landscape. The 8th Berlin Biennale will open its doors to the public on May 28, 2014.

MISS READ: The Berlin Art Book Fair

MISS READ: The Berlin Art Book Fair
19–22 September 2013

MISS READ 2013 opens on the 19th of September and brings together for the fifth year protagonists of international contemporary art book publishing.

Books are an important medium to embody and disseminate ideas, and artists use the book form to elaborate visual stories, generate archives, depict collections, present research results, or even practice book piracy. When artists, authors, and designers collaborate on books, results are often complex and enable new perspectives. At best, an "artist's book" is an artwork in its own right.

The 100+ participants include:
