about CSAV
CSAV – Artists Research Laboratory is a project where dialogue and exchange among artists of different generations and nationalities stand at the heart of a unique artistic and learning experience. The lab is open to fifteen young artists of all nationalities, selected among the applicants by a jury. The programme lasts twenty-four days during which the participants attend a daily workshop activity and theoretical seminars run by the invited artist, the director, the curator and guest lecturers, as well as conferences held by artists, critics and experts of other disciplines.

During this year laboratory, Tacita Dean will invite the young participants to re-find what the Swiss writer Robert Walser named ‘sluggardising’. Interpreted by Dean as the ability to work while appearing to be doing nothing, most often when lying down, this is an important state for the artist and it is often misinterpreted or misunderstood. The level of brain idleness that will be encouraged during the workshop is very rigorous indeed and difficult to achieve. It is an invitation to identify new time and new space in one’s life in order to move closer to discovering an unconscious level to one’s art practice.

The lab is open to candidates between 18 and 35 years old. No study certificate is required, but English is essential.
To apply, please fill in the application form and upload a CV and a portfolio of artworks.
The documents uploaded need to be in pdf format - max 10 Mb and 30 pages for the portfolio.

about the artist
Tacita Dean was born in 1965 in Canterbury, UK. She studied at Falmouth School of Art and the Slade School of Fine Art before moving to live and work in Berlin in 2000.
The films, drawings and other works by Tacita Dean are extremely original. Her recent film portraits express something that neither painting nor photography can capture. They are purely film. And while Dean can appreciate the past, her art avoids any kind of academic approach. Dean's art is carried by a sense of history, time and place, light quality and the essence of the film itself. The focus of her subtle but ambitious work is the truth of the moment, the film as a medium and the sensibilities of the individual.

Dean's solo exhibitions include Tate Britain, London; MACBA, Barcelona (2001), Tate St Ives (2005), Schaulager, Basel (2006), Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (2007), Nicola Trussardi Foundation, Milan; ACCA, Melbourne (2009), MUMOK, Vienna; Turbine Hall (Unilever Series), Tate Modern, London (2011) and the New Museum, New York (2012). Most recent exhibitions include The Fabric Workshop and Museum, Philadelphia and her latest film project JG at Arcadia University Art Gallery, Philadelphia (2013) and Frith Street Gallery, London (2013) and c/o Jolyon, 2012-2013 at Frith Street Gallery, London (2013).

Shows in 2013 also included Instituto Moreira Salles, Rio de Janeiro; Fundación Botín, Santander; Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA), Melbourne; National Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea in Seoul and Museo d'Arte Moderna di Bologna, MAMbo.
Forthcoming shows in 2014 include The Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Utah Museum of Fine Arts, UMFA, National Gallery of Denmark, SMK and Sydney Biennale.
Dean has taken part in many group exhibitions including Venice Biennale (2003, 2005 and 2013), Sydney Biennale (2005) and Sao Paulo Biennale (2006 and 2010), and she recently participated in dOCUMENTA (13) (2012). Dean was awarded the Hugo Boss Prize in 2006 and the Kurt Schwitters Prize in 2009.

David Elliott chose the title of the IV Moscow International Biennale for Young Art A Time for Dreams by rephrasing the famous "I have a dream" speech by Martin Luther King. With this title, the curator emphasizes the chronic instability of our time and the acute need for the young generation to have dreams, hopes and opportunities, to not blindly go with the flow but to invest their strength into the perfection of the world. A Time for Dreams will include the work of over a hundred artists under the age of 35 chosen from across the world. Focusing on both present and future, moving between concern with microcosms and universes, this exhibition will resound as a polyphony of individual perspectives interwoven by different aesthetic and cultural traditions. Just as in Martin Luther King's still unfulfilled dream, the dream of good art, however it is made and wherever it comes from, has to be rooted in truth, ethics and belief in life.

Works submitted to the Biennale may be those of Russian or foreign artists of the new generation, working in the field of contemporary art with the latest strategies, concepts, and techniques (individual, collective, or as part of curatorial projects). Artists of the new generation are defined as those whose age at the time of the opening of the Biennale does not exceed 35 years. The right to apply for participation in the Biennale is limited to the authors of projects (artists and curators in the case of a curatorial project). Applications for the strategic projects of the Biennale for curators (curator groups) are received regardless of financial means. The application process is free. Authors and curators will not receive payment. The artistic director of the biennale will consider all applications and compile a selection of participants in the Biennale.

Institutions are invited to collaborate and young artists and curators to participate.

Future Generation Art Prize, Open Call

3rd edition of the Future Generation Art Prize

The Victor Pinchuk Foundation and the PinchukArtCentre open the application procedure for the third edition of the Future Generation Art Prize 2014. Young artists up to 35 wherever they live and work can apply starting from January 13 till April 12, 2014 at the competition’s website: futuregenerationartprize.org.

To encourage the artists from all over the world to apply, starting from 2014 the Future Generation Art Prize will accept applications in ten different languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Ukrainian.

20 shortlisted artists will be announced in June 2014 and will receive an exhibition at the PinchukArtCentre in Kiev, Ukraine from October 2014 to January 2015. The winner will be announced in December 2014.

Launched by the Victor Pinchuk Foundation in 2009, the Prize is open to all artists up to the age of 35 with the aim of acknowledging and giving long-term support to a future generation of artists from all over the world. The Prize is unique because of its global reach and highly democratic form of application via the Internet.

The winner receives a total of 100,000 USD: 60,000 USD as a cash award, and 40,000 USD towards the production of new work. An additional 20,000 USD is allocated to fund artist-in-residency programmes for up to five special prize-winners.

Traditionally supporting young artists from Ukraine where the PinchukArtCentre is located, Zhanna Kadyrova, the winner of the national prize for young artists in 2013 will also be included into the shortlist of the Future Generation Art Prize 2014, bringing the maximum number of artists in the exhibition to 21.

Jury consisting of prominent curators, directors of museums, artists and experts will be publically announced along with names of 20 artists shortlisted for the Future Generation Art Prize in June 2014.

From its launch the Future Generation Art Prize and its idea to develop a network of young artists worldwide has been supported by its Patron Artists including Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, Andreas Gursky and Takashi Murakami. Besides providing advice and support for the winning artist, Patron Artists also present a solo show in the PinchukArtCentre parallel to the exhibition of shortlisted artists for the Prize. In 2010 and 2012 there were solo shows by Takashi Murakami and Damien Hirst.

A distinguished international Board oversees the Future Generation Art Prize. In addition to chairman Victor Pinchuk and the four Patron Artists, the Board’s membership includes Eli Broad, Dakis Joannou, Elton John, Miuccia Prada and art museum directors Richard Armstrong (Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and Museum), Glenn D. Lowry (The Museum of Modern Art),  and Alfred Pacquement (Musée nationale d’art moderne, Centre Georges Pompidou).

50 Partner Platforms representing more than 38 countries will support the application process and the Prize in 2014. It shows how successfully the Prize has extended its global network and range to involve artists from different regions around the world, especially reaching growing regions such as South America, Australia, Africa and Oceania.
