Frieze Artist Award 2017 | Open Call

The Frieze Artist Award is an international, open call for an artist 25–40 years of age to realize a major site-specific work at Frieze London 2017. The chosen proposal will be presented as part of Frieze Projects, the fair’s celebrated non-profit programme established in 2003 and curated by Raphael Gygax. Frieze Projects and the Frieze Artist Award are supported by the LUMA Foundation.
Proposals will be reviewed by a selection panel including Cory Arcangel (artist), Eva Birkenstock (Director, Kunstverein für die Rheinlande and Westfalen, Düsseldorf), Tom Eccles (Executive Director of the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College, New York) and Raphael Gygax (Curator, Frieze Projects & Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Zurich), chaired by Jo Stella-Sawicka (Artistic Director, Frieze fairs). The closing date for applications is February 10, 2017 at 5pm GMT; and the winner will be announced in the spring of 2017.
Proposals should be new, site-specific works, which respond to the dynamics of the London fair. Applicants will be judged on the innovative nature of their idea and its potential for realisation. Produced under the guidance of Curator Raphael Gygax and the Frieze Projects team, the Award will include a budget of up to 20,000 GBP for production, research and development, artist fees and travel expenses.
The 2016 Frieze Artist Award was given to Yuri Pattison, who installed a networked artwork throughout Frieze London, exploring "trending" data and systems of interpretation or control. In 2015, New York-based artist Rachel Rose, created a scale-model of the fair structure, in which lighting and sound design simulated the sonic and visual sense frequencies of animals inhabiting The Regent’s Park. In 2014, the inaugural winner of the Frieze Artist Award, Mélanie Matranga’s project explored economic and emotional exchange in a series of online videos and an on-site café-installation at Frieze London.
Now in its fourth year, the Frieze Artist Award sits within a rich history of artist awards presented at Frieze London, including the Emdash Award (2011–13) and the Cartier Award (2006–10), which have made possible ambitious new commissions by artists including Cécile B. Evans (2013), Simon Fujiwara (2010), Jordan Wolfson (2009) and Mario García Torres (2007). Explore previous projects here.

It is seeking two volunteers Curatorial Interns to support the Curatorial team in the closing stages of the 2014 Biennial, research and development of the 2016 Biennial; and the delivery of the Biennial’s year-round public program events.
Volunteer Internships typically last for three months (two – three days per week) and specific activities and learning will include:
Supporting the team to keep paper and electronic files related to artists and their commissions up to date and in good order.
Conducting research and collating information on artists for press, marketing, grant applications and general archival purposes.
Conducting research and collating information on possible sites and venues for the public realm artworks.
In consultation with the Team, booking accommodation and travel where applicable for artists, speakers and curators, and assisting with research visits.
Assisting with the technical, logistical and administrative aspects of developing and delivering the year-round public programme and Australian artist residency programme.
Liaising with various external contacts in order to obtain information required for the research and preparation of 2016 Biennial as well as the year-round public programme, as required.
Internships at Liverpool Biennial are unpaid and are classed as voluntary work, however we do make reimbursement for travel to and from work, and also pay a meal allowance. Total reimbursement is £15 per day.

Edith-Russ-Haus for Media Art will award three production and residency grants—10,000 EUR each—to promote international artistic efforts in the field of media art.
The grants from the Foundation of Lower Saxony at the Edith-Russ-Haus for Media Art were created in 2001, and are recognized internationally for their support of the production in the wide range of media art, from video art and net-based projects to audio or audio-visual installations.
The grant covers a period of six months—July–December 2014—and requires residence in Oldenburg for at least one month.
The project or artistic work should be completed within the six-month grant period. An international jury of experts will choose the grant winners.

The Edith-Russ-Haus for Media Art will award up to five grants for artistic works in the area of new media.
–two grants to the amount of 3,000 EUR and participation in the Award for Emerging Artists exhibition at the ERH;
–up to three artists will be acknowledged by having their work presented in the Award for Emerging Artists exhibition at the ERH.
The Edith-Russ-Haus for Media Art would like to recognize new stances in media art and support the winning artists with grants and/or an exhibition. The prize is intended to lastingly promote the careers of young media artists.
Awards will be given to existing works from the broad spectrum of media art, from net-based projects or video art to audio or audio-visual installations.
International artists up to the age of 35 may participate.
An international jury of experts will choose the prize winners.

Exhibitions by international artists and presentations, performances, concerts, workshops and lectures by media artists and theorists are regularly organized. Important past exhibitions have dealt with key contemporary themes such as Something Other Than Photography: Photo&Media andGeneration i.2 – The Aesthetics of the Digital in the 21st Century; important media artists have been presented in solo exhibitions. In October 2013, the first exhibition of the winners of the Edith-Russ-Haus Award for Emerging Media Artists of the Sparda-Bank was presented: Kuai Shen with the space and sound installation Oh!m1gas: biomimetic stridulation environment and ss-io (Hyun Ju Song und Mi Lyoung Bae) with the generative audiovisual installation The Moment.
Since 2001, the Edith-Russ-Haus for Media Art has conducted a regular guest-artist programme, which up to now has sponsored and implemented 35 artistic proposals. To this end, two one-room apartments and a residential studio are available in the guesthouse of the Edith-Russ-Haus, and grant recipients can call upon the institutional support of the institution in implementing their projects.

It's moving from I to It – The Play is a new play written and directed by Tim Etchells commissioned by FormContent. The work is performed by two actors within the Tate Modern collection galleries. The scripted performance references its setting to playfully explore the use of fiction and language in visual art and exhibitions.

Joëlle Tuerlinckx presents a new piece in response to Tate Modern's auditorium. The artist works with the core elements of the space—screen, projector, sound system, blinds and lighting as 'actors' in an opera set to music, creating a choreography of the space. This piece extends her exploration of the relationship between space, drawing and sculpture seen in her exhibition-based work.
Bojana Cvejić and collaborators: Spatial Confessions

Bojana Cvejić addresses the question of publicness through a series of experiments staged within the unique public arena of Tate Modern's Turbine Hall. Invited to manifest the book Public Sphere by Performance (2012, co-written by Cvejić and Vujanović) in the Turbine Hall, and working with and amongst Tate's mass audience, Cvejić invites Christine de Smedt, Ana Vujanović, Marta Popivoda, Lennart Laberenz and Neto Machado to devise choreographic patterns for Tate Modern's visitors, elaborating upon and interfering with the audience flow.
Up Hill Down Hall – An indoor Carnival

Up Hill Down Hall – An indoor Carnival is a contemporary art procession that recreates London’s Notting Hill carnival costumed parade with works by artists who draw inspiration from carnival as an artistic medium. This new commission brings the sensorial experience of Oscar Niemeyer’s Sambadrome in Rio de Janeiro, where the Rio Carnival takes place, to the Turbine Hall at Tate Modern. This day-long performance combines the techniques of display from Brazilian and Caribbean carnival traditions with the style of London's Notting Hill Carnival. Informed by the history of the annual London event, this project reflects the shifting significance of carnival from ritual of resistance and festival of diversity to multimedia performance art form.
Conceived by Claire Tancons in discussion with Tate Modern's curatorial team and in collaboration with the artists in the project including Marlon Griffith and Hew Locke and architectural designer Gia Wolff among others, along with the Notting Hill Carnival community. Claire Tancons is a curator, writer and scholar based in New Orleans whose work focuses on carnival, public ceremonial culture and popular movements.

The Performance Room format corresponds with the way in which Selma and Sofiane Ouissi have been working together for many years. Selma lives in Paris and Sofiane in Tunis. The internet is therefore vital to the production of their collaborative works.

Alexandra Bachzetsis presents From A to B via C, a new work created for a theatre space, and further transformed for an exhibition space and performed live to an online audience as part of the 2014 Performance Room series. Alexandra Bachzetsis' choreography scrutinises the mutual influence between the use of gesture and movement in lowbrow cultural genres such as romantic comedy, TV soap, or hip-hop video clip, and the arts, such as ballet, modern dance and performance.

We are particularly interested in projects that seek to exhibit challenging and experimental work, engaging with new ideas through critical dialogue and experimentation in contemporary arts practice. Proposals for new works, existing works or touring shows including, events, exchange projects and all multidisciplinary practices will be considered. Selected proposals will be provided with funding towards an exhibition production budget, in addition to installation and administrative support.
