Museion presents Klara Lidén’s first solo exhibition in Italy. Born in Stockholm in 1979, the artist has had solo shows in prestigious institutions like the New Museum in New York (2012), the Serpentine Gallery in London (2010) and the Moderna Museet in Stockholm (2007). In 2009 she represented Sweden at the 53rd Venice Biennale, also receiving a special mention from that institution in 2011.
In video works, installations and performances Lidén explores the physical, psychological and social limits and conventions of public and private spaces. Key themes in her works include the street, as an endless source of inspiration and action, an obsession with recycling and transforming urban materials, and physical gesture using the body: themes which underpin pieces that are both intimately personal and unexpectedly dramatic, angry and intelligent at the same time.
At Museion Lidén presents a number of new pieces, including a large installation created for the fourth floor of the museum which literally brings the street into the venue: a disconcerting landscape of sculptures fashioned from real asphalt. Installations, photographs and videos capture actions and performances in which Lidén herself takes centre stage, often in a grotesque, paradoxical way – we see her moon-walking in New York at night, or going down into a drain, or scaling a traffic light. Other videos feature private space as a backdrop for scenes of domestic violence, where the artist smashes up a bicycle or punches herself.
“Museion has been working to foster engagement with sculpture for several years now, highlighting the radical changes undergone by this medium in recent times. Alongside this it is also committed to presenting the work of emerging artists, with special attention to female artists, and Klara Lidén brings these three strands of Museion’s work together”, explains Letizia Ragaglia, director of Museion
